Delray Beach Economy At A Glance

By Jony Mozen

Few people consider the south of Florida as anything more than a perfect vacation area or somewhere to retire that is far away from the harsh conditions further north or west. Most cities in this part of the state have their fair share of retirees and vacationers but it is the people who live and work in them that are the heart beat any community. A look at the Delray Beach economy serves as a point in fact to this end.

In this community it has been shown that a household with two working adults has the capacity to earn well over sixty thousand dollars a year and there is plenty of full time work available for those who want to work. Unemployment levels are beneath the national and state averages according to the most recent census and there is a projected growth pattern of nearly forty percent in the next five years.

There has been a twenty five year revitalization plan in progress for this city. The downtown area has been put on a master plan schedule by the city commission and the community redevelopment and this has resulted in many new shops, dining spots attorneys, architects doctors and financial businesses. The advent of such vigorous growth in public and private development has inspired many to work, live and play in the Urban Core of this city.

The city council has directed millions of dollars towards the improvement of the city center. A continuous time controlled growth and development plan is constantly contributing to the economic growth of this area. New opportunities to begin businesses are made available on a regular basis as the older buildings are renovated and with the new businesses come new employment opportunities. Retail shops and offices offer jobs for sales personnel and management.

The largest employer is the medical center but there are over ten other large businesses who employ over two hundred fifty people each. Many of these places of business may be considered retail or service oriented because they cater to the public. Target is one example and others include hotels and lodges in the area.

Employers with smaller staff are usually involved with restaurants, retail shops and financial offices. These operations rarely have more than ten employees at any given time. Many of them are the newer companies that have evolved during the renovation period and are located in the city hub on Atlantic.

Hotels and summer rentals are a large part of this economy during the summer months. Visitors rent cottages and suites and spend weeks in the area walking and exploring the many beaches that border the Eastern side of town. The funds they bring with them when they arrive is spent on the beaches and in the retail stores that can be found on the shoreline. Many also visit the Everglades National Wildlife refuge.

While this is a relatively small city compared to some of its neighbors this city of over sixty thousand offers numerous opportunities for young career minded people and their families. It is also a place that has a very good growth pattern for new businesses. Some larger businesses have already located their corporate headquarters in this area. This area has gained a reputation of a prosperous future for its inhabitants.
