Carlsbad California - Fun Activities

By Terry Hunefeld

Carlsbad is a picturesque seaside village ideally located 30 miles north of San Diego. Here you will find irresistible sandy beaches, three unique lagoons, two luxurious resorts and more than two dozen fine hotels.
Visitors love walking around the "village center" that offers outstanding shopping and dozens of great restaurants for every taste and pocketbook. There is a never-ending array of things to do in Carlsbad - this report shares six things every outdoor-loving visitor MUST do.

1. Located on a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the Flower Fields have become one of Carlsbad's most cherished and waited-for traditions. Each spring this 50 acre farm bursts into a dazzling rainbow of color. The annual display is an important part of Carlsbad's heritage - nature's way of announcing the arrival of spring. The Flower Fields are located at 5704 Paseo de Norte Drive in Carlsbad and are visible from Interstate 5.

2. 600 acre Batiquitos Lagoon is a nature preserve rimmed with more than 2 miles of walking trails -The Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation maintains and staffs a small but specimen-packed interpretive center on the north shore. Trained naturalists lead interesting walks pointing out many of the flora, fauna and unique characteristics of the lagoon - home to more than 180 species of birds. The lagoon is treasured for its diversity of native plants.

3. Legoland is a world famous family attraction. It's fun, not overly-expensive and actually quite pleasant - for a theme park. If you've got a big day planned with the kids, we recommend getting there early. Head straight to the popular Indiana Jones and Land of Adventure rides, then the Test Track roller coaster. Lines can get long at the most popular attractions the day goes on, but are short first thing in the morning, and are always shorter than Disneyland or Knott's Berry Farm.

4. The tree-lined village of downtown Carlsbad is the perfect place to walk, shop, dine and sight-see. Find a parking spot and set off on foot to explore Carlsbad Village where you will find unusual boutiques, eclectic antique shops, lovely jewelry shops, European toy stores, an amazing array of clothing stores, quaint pubs and architecturally significant historic homes. A well-known landmark is the historic Alt Karlsbad Hanse Hous, site of the first mineral water spa, a mainstay of Carlsbad Village since the 1880s.

5. Carlsbad Village offers many restaurants from the very casual to quite upscale. Le Passage on State Street is a local favorite - a delightful French bistro with outdoor dining. Fish House Vera Cruz is a well known and popular family-style seafood restaurant with a marvelous fish market. There are great bars and night spots that get fun and lively, especially on summer weekends,

6. Agua Hedionda Lagoon is an important Ecological Reserve managed by the California Department of Fish and Game. Trails along the Lagoon lead from the Discovery Center which offers unique exhibits about the lagoon with a focus on the Native Americans who once inhabited the area. The Center affords spectacular views overlooking the surrounding lagoon and Pacific Ocean in the distance. Visitors may walk through the garden containing more than 800 native plants and displays chock full of information about Agua Hedionda Lagoon and its native plants and animals.
