Take your own travel items on the flight. This includes a pillow, blanket, entertainment device and headphones. Airline food prices can be reasonable, but they don't have a very good selection. A useful item to pack for your flight, inside your carry-on bag, is a fleece blanket with sleeves. Before you leave to catch your flight, put a generous amount of the ointment on the inside of your nose. It keeps out the germs and helps prevent you from getting sick. On your next flight, chew gum to keep your ears from popping on take off. The pressure changes during a flight can pop your ears. This is not particularly painful. It is, however, rather annoying. Before take off, start chewing a stick of gum. This will often prevent your ears from popping or at least, ease the pressure.

A great way to get some sleep on an airplane is by bringing an eye mask. Even when you close your eyes, you can still see the different colors and shapes in front of you. With an eye mask, that will allow it to be completely blacked out, allowing much better chance of sleep.

Another good way to get some sleep on an airplane is by using headphones or ear plugs. This will drown out the constant engine noise and also the little kids and talkative adults on the plane. You will be able to relax and get some much needed rest.

You already know you can't take drinks with you through security at the airport. But you can definitely take a water bottle as long as it's empty. Save yourself the two dollars on water you're going to buy immediately after you get through security - just bring an empty water bottle from home and fill up with icy-fresh fountain water once you're through.

If you are planning to travel to a country in a very different time zone to yours, make sure you factor jet lag into your plans. Having a low key, relaxing first day planned will get your trip off to a good start, and avoid you having to explore when all you want to do is sleep.
