In so doing, the repairs will be done in a more comprehensive manner. A socket wrench will be required for this exercise. It is used to remove the bolts that attach the rails to the table.

After the rails are removed, the staples which attach the felt to the table are removed. A staple puller is the best tool for this though a screwdriver may also be used. The screwdriver should have a flat head. The staples that have been removed should be put aside carefully so that they are not misplaced. Besides, they are likely to cause injury if stepped upon.

The extent of the cracks is known through inspection of the slate. Beeswax will suffice to fill the fine cracks and small chips. It should be held above the crack, some 4 inches, as the wax is melted. The melting is done using a portable propane torch. The wax is left to drip into the cracks.

For it to bond effectively, slate requires enough wax. Therefore, there should be placement of enough wax into the cracks. After the wax gets cooled, any excesses are removed using a paint scraper. Excess wax ought to be removed because it will leave behind an unpleasant appearance. The right amounts should be placed so that the cracks are filled effectively.

The other option is to use billiard table wax. It contains resin that will harden in a better way as compared to beeswax and gives a durable outcome. Billiard wax is the best option for bigger cracks. The excess wax will need to be removed in this case as well before the slate is wiped using damp sponge. Billiard table wax also comes in handy when you have to seal loose seams that are on the slate.

If the cracks are more extensive, the best option to use will be slate repair glue. This has thick consistency that helps to effectively bond the slate. This is applied inside the crack on both sides. The two separate sides of the slate are pushed together firmly. They are held together for a while so that the glue bonds the separate pieces of slate.

Because of the pressure of the slate being pushed together, some glue may seep out. The glue should be left to dry up. After that, it is smoothed down using sandpaper. After repairs are complete, the felt is returned to position.
