Anyone one loves wine, beautiful scenery and has a sense of adventure should consider a vacation in South Africa. This amazing country has so much to offer. From rugged coast line, to souring mountains and picturesque villages it truly is a travellers paradise. The local people also offer a warm welcome to all their guests and make them feel at home.

Just a short drive will take travellers to a region that has just about everything. Beautiful villages complete with picture perfect Dutch colonial buildings, incredible coast line and rugged mountains. The climate is just about perfect with warm dry summers and mild winters. It is perfect for many types of agriculture and for over three hundred years the Cape Winelands have been the center of production for the whole of the southern part of the African continent.

One of the original settlers to realize the potential of the area with the Dutchman Jan Van Riebeech. In 1659 he established the first vineyard in the area and it has never looked back. The diversity of soils and micro climates is perfect for growing a variety of grapes. The resulting wines really take on a flavour of the area and many are now being exported to Europe and far beyond.

Many people are keen to experience life on a farm when they look around for a place to stay. The old Dutch colonial buildings create a truly unique atmosphere with charm and ambiance to spare. These homes are like something out of a picture book and are typically furnished in period style. Staying for a night or two is an unforgettable experience that should not be missed.

Many of the farms in the region have been family owned and operated for generations. The Dutch colonist Jan Van Riebeech was the first one to actually produce wine as early as 1659. His products were well received and the area has never looked back and is now the largest wine producing area in South Africa.

In today's busy world many tourists are looking for a vacation that is a little different. They love the idea of combining great food, wines, accommodations and scenery. They can customize their trip to include a little bit of everything. This can be some time at the beach, hiking in the mountains and sipping wine on the porch. Those who really want to see how the production takes place will have the opportunity to tour one of the many vineyards.

There are an excellent range of places to stay. These range from family run bed and breakfasts to luxury hotels. Many of the farms are now diversifying and taking in guests as a way to help support them. Some even offer sites for weddings and conferences that are really outstanding.

Fair trade has also become a popular buzz word around the world. The Cape wine producing regions have also worked very hard to make sure that all members of the population are able to benefit from the developing tourist industry. It seems the humble grape is having a very positive effect on the entire area.
